Stream Water Temperature Analysis and Modelling

The Department of Forest Engineering, Resources, and Management seeks applicants for a Postdoctoral Fellowship position (1.0 FTE, up to 12 months) to investigate the relationship between contemporary forestry practices and stream water temperature in western Oregon. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to integrate data collected at 3 paired watershed studies located in contrasting landscapes:  Trask Paired Watershed Project, Hinkle Creek Paired Watershed Study, and the Alsea Watershed Study Revisited. These long-term paired watershed studies are part of the Watershed Research Cooperative (WRC; http://watershedsresearch.org/), whose mission is to conduct research on the effects of contemporary forest practices on water quality, fisheries, and other related values.

Job Qualifications: The ideal candidate will need to have a(n):

– PhD in a quantitative field of research (hydrology, related fields) from an accredited university completed by date of interview,

– demonstrated experience performing spatial and statistical analyses with a working knowledge of programming languages such as IDL, R, MATLAB, or   Python,

– demonstrated experience in the analysis of water quality data,

– understanding of forest hydrology, particularly in the Pacific Northwest

– demonstrated experience in analysis of stream temperature data at the reach and catchment scale, and a strong publication record in peer reviewed journals.

Position Duties: an estimate of 60% would be dedicated to data analysis and 40% for publishing results in peer-reviewed literature (at least 2 publications). The successful candidate will systematically evaluate the data from the 3 paired watersheds and integrate the results into a regional model that allows predictions outside the boundaries of the original paired watersheds.
