The Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, IMK-IFU) offers positions for two postdocs (m/f) in
Climate- and Hydrological Sciences
Starting date: as soon as possible
to strengthen the WASCAL team at the KIT Campus-Alpin in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Within the framework of the international project WASCAL (www.wascal.org) funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the impact of climate- and land surface changes on hydrology, agriculture, biodiversity, and the livelihood of the population in West Africa is investigated. For this purpose, regional climate models and coupled modelling systems were developed and applied for high-resolution regional climate simulations and for the investigation of land-atmosphere interactions. A comprehensive observational network, consisting of automatic weather stations and state-of-the-art turbulent flux measurement towers were installed in southern Burkina Faso and northern Ghana. We are now seeking two motivated postdocs to join our team for the analysis and dissemination of the high-resolution regional climate simulation data and of the observational data collected in the region, as well as for the maintenance of our network of stations in the field. This research is performed in close cooperation with several universities and major research institutions in Germany, the Competence Centre of WASCAL in Ouagadougou and further local and trans-national partners in West Africa.
The Campus Alpin of the Institute of Meteorology and Climate research at KIT is located in the scenic environment of the Bavarian Alps in immediate vicinity of Germany’s highest mountain, one hour south of Munich. In addition to an attractive work environment, both positions offer the chance to visit West Africa to work with local scientists and technicians, the ability to shape the future of WASCAL by contributing to the next research agenda, and a sound perspective for continuation.
Postdoc Position ”Regional Climate Simulation Analysis“
The successful application will hold an excellent master and PhD degree in meteorology, hydrology, physics, mathematics, environmental science, environmental engineering or related subjects. Comprehensive knowledge in the application of regional climate models (e.g. WRF, CCLM or RegCM4) and in the statistical and graphical analysis of model data is essential. Extensive skills in PYTHON, shell scripting, statistical analysis tools (e.g. MATLAB, R), common data formats (netCDF, grib) and applications (NCO, CDO) in this context are expected. Proven experience in big data analysis and process automatization are a must. Fitness for the tropics, the ability to travel to and work in West Africa, a strong team spirit and perfect communication skills in English are required. Fluency in French is considered as an asset.
Postdoc Position ”Climate Monitoring and Station Maintenance”
The successful applicant will hold an excellent master and PhD degree in meteorology, hydrology, physics, geo-ecology, environmental science, environmental engineering, geography or related subjects. Extensive knowledge of state-of-the-art measurement techniques in meteorology or hydrology and the analysis of observational data is expected. Sound experience in the installation and maintenance of meteorological stations, in Eddy-Covariance flux measurement techniques and in the development of operational systems for climate or hydrological monitoring are beneficial. Experience in PYTHON, shell scripting, statistical analysis tools (e.g. MATLAB or R) are required. Fitness for the tropics, the ability to travel to and work in West Africa, a strong team spirit and organisational talent, and perfect communication skills in English are required. Fluency in French is considered as an asset.
