The National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) aims to support long term science expertise in aerosol modelling to improve the UK’s modelling capability and narrow the uncertainty in aerosol effects on climate. You will develop and apply new expertise that will contribute to the reduction of model uncertainty, with an emphasis on developing our understanding of North Atlantic climate change through the North
Atlantic Climate System Integrated Study (ACSIS).
ACSIS is a new NERC Long-Term Science programme funded for five years (2016-2021), led by NCAS, with the overarching goal to enhance capabilities to detect, attribute and predict changes in the North Atlantic Climate System. The Leeds project, led by Professor Ken Carslaw, focuses on further developing and applying advanced models of aerosols and clouds from the scale of <1 km to the global scale. The emphasis of the project is on reducing uncertainties in forcing estimates by using a range of models and observational datasets, including in situ measurements and satellite data in collaboration with the National Centre for Earth Observation. The project is intended to make a lasting contribution to the UK’s National Capability models.
You will have a PhD, or be close to completing, in a relevant area of atmospheric modelling, with experience of numerical modelling in fortran and data visualisation software. You will work closely and interactively with a team of scientists, including scientists at NCAS, the Met Office and the National Centre for Earth Observation, and as such you will need excellent communications skills. You will also have a commitment to publishing original results at an international level. It would be advantageous if you had experience of using large atmospheric or climate models.
