Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Atmospheric Radiative Processes

We seek a post-doctoral research scientist to join a project investigating near-infrared absorption by water vapour. Our collaborators at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory will make novel laboratory measurements that will be analysed and applied to understand atmospheric processes at Reading.
The scientist will work on a NERC-funded project “Advanced Spectroscopy for improved characterisation of the near-Infrared water vapour Continuum” (ASPIC) which starts on 1 June 2018. ASPIC aims to improve understanding of water vapour continuum absorption in a part of the spectrum where few measurements have been made, especially in conditions relevant to the atmosphere; there is also substantial disagreement amongst the available measurements. This absorption is relevant to both the Earth’s radiation budget and remote sensing applications. Recent advances in laboratory spectroscopy allow measurements of much higher quality. The scientist will play a role in making those measurements, but their prime responsibility will be to analyse the measurements to extract the continuum signal and to perform detailed radiative transfer calculations to characterise the atmospheric consequences. The latter part of the project will involve collaboration with the Met Office and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, where the impact on their weather forecasting and climate models will be assessed.
