Fully-Funded PhD Studentship in Boundary Layer Meteorology at Central Michigan University
Dr. Jason Keeler is looking for a highly-motivated student interested in coastal meteorology or thunderstorm outflow airmasses to join his group at Central Michigan University starting Summer or Fall 2019.
The successful candidate will have hands-on experience operating the CMU Mobile Mesonet and instrumented small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS), as well as experience conducting idealized modeling studies using WRF and/or CM1.
Potential research specializations include:
Lake Michigan lake-breeze front structural differences between synoptic-scale onshore and offshore flow environments, and implications for convective initiation.
Thermodynamic evolution of thunderstorm outflow airmasses, with a focus on processes that could lead to destabilization.
Students are encouraged to talk with Dr. Keeler about other potential projects related to thunderstorms in the Laurentian Great Lakes region.
Four years of support are available through the Earth and Ecosystem Science interdisciplinary program.
This is a research intensive program, with a low course load and high research productivity.
Students in the EES PhD program map out individualized plans of study to maximize their potential for success.
Qualifications:
Priority will be given to students who have completed their M.S. in atmospheric sciences or meteorology, or will complete it prior to their start date.
Experience programming (e.g., Matlab or Python, etc.) is required.
Students with experience in either field research or running atmospheric models are encouraged to apply.
Contributions to published research will be considered an asset.
