PhD or Post Doctoral Fellowship Opportunity

A PhD or PostDoc research opportunity is available immediately. The
funding associated with the position requires the successful applicant
to conduct very-high resolution image classification. Classification and
analysis of traditional areal imagery across urban areas of Ontario as
well as wetland rich landscape imagery acquired from unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAVs) in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta are required. The
successful applicant will work with a team of graduate students at the
University of Waterloo, Department of Geography and Environmental
Management, on a combination of projects funded by the National Science
and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada, Environment and
Climate Change Canada, and Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environmental
Solutions. Collaboration will also take place with colleagues and
students in the Department of Biology at the University of Waterloo.
The successful applicant will get an opportunity to work with state
of the art software (e.g., ENVI, eCognition, Pix4D) and equipment (e.g.,
Aeryon Labs SkyRanger, Leica MultiStation Terrestrial Laser Scanner).
Opportunities to work directly with ECCC in Ottawa and to travel to
Alberta for data collection will also be available.
Applicants should have an established record of training and
excellence in remote sensing. Applicants are invited to submit an

Funding will be commensurate upon qualifications and priority will be
given to Canadian applications. The post doctoral position is for 1
year and may be extended depending on subsequent funding acquisition.
The salary range is $40,000 – $50,000. The PhD funding falls within
$30,000 – $40,000. Additional project opportunities and performance may
lead to increased funding in subsequent years.
