of the Université catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium invites applications for the following position:
Foreign Post-doctoral Fellow
Starting date: ideally May 1
Full time position for 24 months
Net monthly salary 2300-2500 € (depending on experience – this includes social insurances).
The candidates must not have spent more than 2 years in Belgium over the last 3 years and should not have obtained their PhD more than 6 years before the starting date of the grant.
The starting date is flexible but should not be later than July 1.
The postdoctoral researcher will work on the project ‘East Antarctic surface mass Balance in the Anthropocene : Observations and multiscale modelling” (Mass2Ant) funded in the framework
of Belgian Research Action through interdisciplinary networks (Brain.Be – BELSPO).
The project (www.mass2ANT.be ) aims to understand the local processes responsible for the variability of surface mass
balance in the Princess Ragnhild Coast (PRC) region (Antarctica) and to document the changes during the last 300 years. A particular attention is paid on the links between local, regional, and large scale processes to determine the origin of the variability
of the surface mass balance. This will allow assessing if the observed changes over PRC (e.g. mass gain) are representative for larger areas and if these are the result of anthropogenic forcing and/or linked to the natural variability of oceanic and atmospheric
circulation.
The successful candidate will be in charge of analyzing the origin of the climate variability recorded by three ice cores collected on ice rises in the PRC regions. A goal is to relate
the signal common in the three cores to nearby and more distant data in order to infer large-scale connections. Those analyses will be based on the results of global, regional and small-scale models as well as observations.
Required qualifications:
– To have a PhD in climatology, Earth science or related field (physics, informatics) with previous experience in Earth science;
– To have published in peer-reviewed international journals;
– To have experience in computational programming and in managing large data sets;
– An experience in climate or ice modelling is a strong asset;
– To have demonstrated verbal and written communication skills in English;
– To have interest in working in a multidisciplinary team environment.
