The Norwegian Polar Institute invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow position in marine optics. This position is in the Nansen Legacy project, and is a joint position with the University of Bergen. The workplace will be located in Tromsø and Bergen, Norway.
The successful candidate will examine the recent changes in sea ice conditions in the Barents Sea area and changes in the light climate in the ocean using existing data and radiative transfer modeling. The inherent optical properties of the water masses and sea ice will be investigated using data collected during research expeditions and from autonomous vehicles, to be utilized in models to represent the regional light conditions. Participation on cruises will be expected.
Applicants must hold a completed PhD in oceanography, meteorology, physics, applied mathematics, or other closely related field. Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English are required.
Candidates should have experience in radiative transfer modeling, and a good understanding of radiative transfer in water bodies is preferred. Strong numerical and programming skills; experience with data analysis; experience with design, planning and organization of field measurements; and experience with optical and oceanographic instrumentation are assets. Fieldwork and cruise experience will be beneficial.
Application deadline 25 February.
