Within the “Make our planet great again” German
Research Initiative (MOPGA-GRI) we have an open PhD position
for three years starting as of June 1st, 2019.
Project
goal: We use a range
of tools, from high-resolution large-eddy simulations, to
global analyses of satellite records, to determine and
quantify the driving factors governing cloud-radiative
properties over the world´s oceans. This particular project
will focus on understanding the organisation of mixed-phase
clouds (clouds containing a mixture of water and ice) over
the oceans by performing a range of high-resolution
cloud-resolving simulations with ICON-LES. Mixed-phase
clouds stretch over hundreds of kilometers and have been
shown to impact the regional climate in the Arctic and
Southern Ocean. Their behavior may also influence
larger-scale circulation patterns in the atmosphere.
Tasks: This position will involve working with Dr.
Anna Possner at the Institute for Atmospheric and
Environmental Sciences at the Campus Riedberg. The
successful candidate will play a major role in shaping the
scientific questions together with Dr. Possner. They will
further be required to plan and execute the necessary
computational and statistical analyses. Publication of the
results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and
presentations at international conferences are expected.
Further funds for professional development are also
available. There are no teaching obligations with this
position.
Requirements: A scientific degree with above average grades
in Physics, Environmental Sciences, Computational Sciences,
Statistics, or other related disciplines is required. A
demonstrated record of scientific curiosity, self-motivated
thinking, technical ability and/or communication skills are
valued as much as disciplinary knowledge. The position will
require extensive shell scripting, analyses in Python, and
graphical presentation of the results. Strong communication
skills in English (oral and written) are desired.
Computational skills will be required for this position.
Pre-existing knowledge of cloud physics, or atmospheric
modelling is desirable, but not required.
Goethe University is in strong support of
gender equality and in particular encourages women
to apply for this post. Preference will be given to equally
qualified people with disabilities. Goethe University has been
certified as a family-friendly University in 2005 and actively
supports the reintegration of parents into the work force
following parental leave. Part-time positions are possible
given that job requirements for the position are not
compromised.
