Dear Colleagues,
a postdoctoral position is available at the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany (Department Troposphere Research, IMK-TRO) that focuses
on the application and development of a portable data assimilation system to be used for observation campaigns. This position is initially for 3 years but may become permanent depending on the progress achieved and the strategical development of the institute.
The planned data assimilation experiments will for the first time combine high-resolution multi-instrument observations from the mobile platform KITcube with the operational COSMO/KENDA system
of the German Weather Service (DWD).
The work is part of a new collaboration between KIT and the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich and DWD, and will involve adapting KENDA to a small domain and high resolution for different world regions and observation campaigns. Scientific exploration
of representation error and boundary layer parameterizations are some possible applications.
We seek enthusiastic candidates with a Ph.D. in atmospheric or computational science, physics or applied mathematics. Requirements for the post include good technical skills, expertise in numerical discretization/minimization algorithms, data
assimilation methodology and the ability to work and code with numerical weather prediction models as well as good communication skills and an interest in atmospheric observations. As this project is pioneering, we will allow candidates ample opportunity
to familiarize themselves with KENDA and KITcube and to acquire additional knowledge needed to successfully complete the work.
Applicants should email a CV, a short statement of motivation, contact information of two references, and the possible start date to Prof. Dr. Peter Knippertz (peter.knippertz@kit.edu) and Priv.-Doz.
Dr. Tijana Janjic (tijana.pfander@lmu.de). Deadline is 22 April 2019.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us in case of questions.
